Wander Yonder
The rest of America may be picking fall apples in their Argyle sweaters but here in L.A. we’re still kicking it at the beach.
Accordingly, the best place to be an envy-inducing Angeleno this weekend is the two-day Way Over Yonder roots festival on the Santa Monica Pier, starting tonight.
Local Natives and the divine Lucinda Williams headline the TGIF opening night of the West Coast iteration of the famous Newport Folk Fest. L.A. homegrown fave Jackson Browne anchors the afternoon into evening line-up on Saturday.
Artists will perform full-length sets. You’ll find acoustic performers inside on the Carousel Stage and geared-up artists on the outdoor Pier Stage.
Wear your straw cowboy hat.

Shadows in the Sunshine
Sunshine-bleached Los Angeles is the birthplace of Noir: that one-two punch of literature and film where it’s always the dark night of the soul.
This Saturday, don your fedora and head to the mean streets of West Hollywood for WeHo Reads ~ Noir: the FREE celebration of September as National Literacy Month.
Explore all facets of L.A.’s heart of darkness with a staged reading of Janet Fitch’s The Method, a quartet of hard-boiled poets, and multiple literary panels focusing on LGBT, diversity, history/biography, and women both as writers and characters.
Thrill to “literature as blood sport” with Bootleg Theater’s Write Club.
Their theme? “I Wake Up Screaming”.
You know the feeling.
In addition to screenings of the ultimate noir classic Detour and the groundbreaking Who Framed Roger Rabbit? — also the debut of animation’s sultriest siren — enjoy noir-era jazz and a Raymond Chandler-inspired chalk mural and get a photo of yourself in your best mid-century threads.
Your pint-size P.I. can make an I.D. badge and “shield wallet” with Art 2 Go and enjoy theater from Rogue Artist’s Ensemble….
…where the dark side presumably has lighter shades of grey.

The self-described “coolest block in America” is throwing itself a 30th birthday bash and everyone’s invited.
You’ll want to wear your stretchy shorts to Sunday’s Abbot Kinney Festival. In addition to a shrimp boil, enjoy prepared artisanal eats from Superba Food + Bread and Willie Jane among dozens of other vendors. Of course, there will be a plethora of gourmet food trucks on hand including Kogi BBQ, Border Grill and Cousins Maine Lobster.
Your stomach is growling already.
The festival is free but you’ll want to consider getting a $35 Fast Pass for quick(er) drinking at the three biergartens; not only do you not wait in line, your first drink is included.
That means more time to check out the five entertainment stages featuring DJ’s, bands, kid friendly acts and spoken word dynamos like Brendan Constantine and Mike “the Poet” Sonksen.
Bring your wallet; renowned Venice artists Ed Moses, Laddie John Dill and Tom Everhart have each created a for-sale commemorative poster for the event. The fest organizers also promise “300 quality vendors”.
In other words, no macrame’d wall hangings….
